Interestingly, the first St. Patrick's Day parade occurred not in Ireland, but in America. Historical records indicate that a parade was celebrated on March 17, 1601, in a Spanish colony located in what is now St. Augustine, Florida. This event, along with a previous celebration the year before, was organized by the Irish vicar, Ricardo Artur, of the Spanish Colony.
More than a century later, in March 1772, Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City to honor their patron saint.
